Momondo's new ad campaign, 'The DNA Journey', has taken the world of social media by storm.

The ad, which uses the magic of DNA testing to bring together a group of strangers in an effort to prove we're all more similar than we are different, has been viewed over 23 million times on Facebook alone.

However, as heartening as the message is, Danish scientists have now chipped in – and, according to them, the logic behind the tests doesn't hold up under closer scrutiny, reports TV2.

Flawed
The problem with the ad is tied in with the larger problem of DNA tests of the kind it used, believes Anders Johannes Hansen, a professor at the National History Museum of Denmark.

He explained to TV2 that individual DNA needs to be compared with a characteristic sample of 'national' DNA in order to contextualise it.

"DNA from people in the advertisement must be compared to something in order to legitimise the test. This would also have to be something where the DNA was 100 percent from a particular country or region," he said.

No such thing as perfect
However, seeing as there are no patents for DNA, it is impossible to characterise a sequence as 100 percent Danish – or German, or Indian.

"Whatever you measure the DNA up against, how do you decide what is 100 percent Danish, or German or English DNA? It's impossible – because we're part of a genetically multicultural story."

Used actors
The film was shot in Vega, Copenhagen, Denmark, and directed by Jeppe Rønde (Bridgend).

Several online commentators have drawn attention to how the advert used actors. For example, Yousuf Emrani, who plays the Bangladeshi candidate, is a London-based actor. Likewise, Khaleila Hisham, who also appeared in 'The DNA Journey, is also an actress.

However, Momondo denies that the advert was scripted and involved acting.

Our sense of identity stems from our upbringing – our culture, our family values, and the stories passed down from generation to generation. But how much do you really know about who you are and where you come from, and how does that influence how you look at the rest of the world?

We joined forces with international travel search site, Momondo to put 67 people to the test – the DNA test. Each coming from different cultures and backgrounds, participants were taken on a journey into who they are based on their DNA. Where do you think you come from? I've always been curious about my ancestry, so I decided to take one of those home DNA tests. The results were fascinating.

Like me, I'm sure your family has told you stories passed down from generation to generation. Stories about your heritage, culture, and ancestry. The more we know about ourselves and our family's past – the more our personal identity evolves.

For me, the stories included family members immigrating from Ireland and Poland looking for a better life in the United States. But these tales are sometimes vague and incomplete after being passed down from person to person, like a childhood game of telephone.

How much is true? How much is being left out? This is where genealogy research and modern DNA technology can give you a more accurate picture of where you really come from. Sometimes, there are surprises…

I partnered up with the flight search experts at Momondo to answer those questions for myself, and hopefully inspire you to do the same.

Testing Your DNA

Home DNA testing is becoming easier and more affordable than ever before. Companies like AncestryDNA can give you results in a matter of weeks, while also comparing your DNA with 1.5 million members, possibly introducing you to relatives you didn't know you had.

It's fascinating technology. For under $100, this home DNA test looks at a person's entire genome from more than 700,000 locations via a sample of saliva to predict your genetic ethnicity.

I received my DNA testing kit in the mail and followed the simple instructions. Basically, you spit into a plastic vial until your saliva reaches a black mark.

Next, you twist on a cap that releases a special DNA stabilizing liquid into the sample. Write down your tracking number, put your vial into a pre-paid box and mail it off to the lab. Easy and fast.

Test results normally take about 6-8 weeks to process. When they're ready, you receive an email notification with a link to your password protected account, where you can view your ethnicity map and see where your ancestors came from.

What Were My Results?

After listening to family stories for years, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what the test would say. But actually seeing my DNA results for the first time was still thrilling…

• 36% Eastern Europe
• 14% Scandinavian
• 8% European Trace Regions
• 2% West Asia

I knew my family's strongest roots were based in Ireland and Poland. My Grandmother was born in Ireland and sailed to the United States when she was only 17. My Great Grandfather fled Poland when he was 16 after both his parents were murdered.

However there was a surprise too. Like the 2% West Asian DNA. I also thought I'd have more West European roots, due to my German last name Karsten. But it seems I'm actually more Scandinavian than German!

Interesting, as I've been traveling to Sweden and Norway lately and enjoying it very much. Maybe it's viking blood coursing through my veins that keeps me returning to photograph the landscapes of Scandinavia?

The information has broadened the way I think about my identity. It's opened my world a little more. Even though I knew about my Polish heritage, the test results have reinforced my desire to visit Poland later this year.

Last year I traveled to Ireland with my parents and sister on a family genealogy road trip, visiting the hometown of my Grandmother and meeting Irish relatives for the first time.

Significance

There is much interest in understanding the role of natural selection in shaping physiological adaptations to climate, diet, and diseases in humans. We investigated this issue by analyzing genomic data from Native American populations inhabiting different ecological regions and ancient Native Americans. We found signals of natural selection at the fatty acid desaturases (FADS) genes not only in an Arctic population, as was previously found, but throughout the Americas, suggesting a single and strong adaptive event that occurred in Beringia, before the range expansion of the first Americans within the American continent and Greenland.

Abstract

When humans moved from Asia toward the Americas over 18,000 y ago and eventually peopled the New World they encountered a new environment with extreme climate conditions and distinct dietary resources. These environmental and dietary pressures may have led to instances of genetic adaptation with the potential to influence the phenotypic variation in extant Native American populations. An example of such an event is the evolution of the fatty acid desaturases (FADS) genes, which have been claimed to harbor signals of positive selection in Inuit populations due to adaptation to the cold Greenland Arctic climate and to a protein-rich diet. Because there was evidence of intercontinental variation in this genetic region, with indications of positive selection for its variants, we decided to compare the Inuit findings with other Native American data. Here, we use several lines of evidence to show that the signal of FADS-positive selection is not restricted to the Arctic but instead is broadly observed throughout the Americas. The shared signature of selection among populations living in such a diverse range of environments is likely due to a single and strong instance of local adaptation that took place in the common ancestral population before their entrance into the New World.
